Nissan lifts the virtual veil on its Vision Gran Turismo concept [w/video]

Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo

Most of the vehicles you can drive in Gran Turismo 6 are digital renditions of actual cars that you could (at least in theory) drive on the road or track. But Polyphony Digital, the studio behind the immensely popular video game franchise, isn't satisfied with leaving things there, so it's been collaborating with a steady stream of automakers to design concept cars specifically for Playstation. We've already seen concepts from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi. But now it's time for the one automaker arguably more familiar than any other with bridging the gap between virtual and reality â€" particularly when it comes to the Gran Turismo universe.

That, of course, would be Nissan. The Japanese automaker has taken the most talented video gamers from their couches and placed them behind the wheel of actual racecars. And the Red Bull Racing team (which its luxury division Infiniti sponsors and its sister-company Renault powers) has rendered a handful of fanciful digital racers for the game as well. But now, after giving us a couple of teasers, Nissan has revealed its own design for GT6.

Dubbed the Nissan Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo, the design is the work of "a team of young designers" at the automaker's London design studio with input from their technical counterparts in Japan. Although little in the way of (theoretical) technical details were released, the Concept 2020 clearly takes the GT-R formula several years into the future with a front-engined 2+2 form and a more futuristic take on signature Godzilla styling.

Nissan says it "believes that the real-world is ready" for the concept, by which we understand it means to unveil a physical example of the digital show car (m uch as Mercedes and VW have) at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed. But beyond that, if this is a precursor for the next GT-R, count us that much more intrigued than we were already. Scope out the details and video below.

NASHVILLE. Tenn. â€" Nissan today lifts the virtual covers off the NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo, a vision of what a high performance Nissan could look like in the future. It was created through close collaboration with the creators of Gran Turismo®, Polyphony Digital Inc., the legendary PlayStation® driving franchise.

NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo began life as dream project for Nissan designers who were given free rein to create their dream supercar for their own Gran Turismo fantasy garage.

Created by a team of young designers at Nissan Design Europe, in London, England, the model was considered to have so much poten tial that it has benefited from input from an advanced engineering team based at Nissan Technical Centre in Atsugi, Japan.

As a result, NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo gives hints as to how a supercar of the future might look.

In July, automotive enthusiasts will be able to discover that performance first-hand when it becomes available to download in Gran Turismo®6, just as they did with the NISSAN GT-R and Skylines from earlier episodes of the historic franchise. That performance heritage and commitment to delivering excitement for enthusiasts is why there are Nissan vehicles in the franchise.

But as a specialist in automotive design in three-dimensions, Nissan believes that the real-world is ready for the NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo. Watch this space...
