Ford F-650

A few more Ford trucks will be built in the US in the near future with news that production of the F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks will move from Mexico to Ford's Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake, OH. Ford hasn't confirmed a precise timeline for the move, but The Detroit News claims the Blue Oval will make the shift later this year or in early 2015.

As Ford spokesperson Mike Levine reminded us, back in 2011, Ford announced in an investor release that it would shift production "after the [Ohio] plant stops current production of the Ford E-Series vans." According to that release, the Ohio factory will also receive $128 million in upgrades to build the new trucks, plus the F53 motorhome chassis and F59 commercial chassis.

The trucks are currently built in Escobedo, Mexico, as part of a joint venture with Navistar International. The Kansas City Assembly Plant in Kansas City, MO will begin building the new Transit van. The shift is part of Ford's long-term plan to move more commercial vehicle production to the US because it, "will be able to streamline and strengthen the engineering and manufacturing of our next-generation medium-duty trucks," said then-Ford President Mark Fields in the 2011 release. According to The Detroit News, Ford will issue a more detailed release about the shift in production on February 28.

Honda Insight

Insight hasn't amounted to even a tenth of Prius sales, and well over half of those sold were JDM.

It's been a rough ride for the Honda Insight, and now its journey appears to be at an end â€" word is that the five-door hybrid hatchback is going out of production.

The Insight nameplate was first introduced as a two-seat, three-door gas-electric hatchback just before the turn of the millennium, beating the Toyota Prius to market as America's first hybrid by over half a year. That original bantamweight Insight was discontinued in 2006, only to be revived in a larger, more Prius-like five-door form in 2009. But the new model never managed to keep up (let alone surpass) its rival from Toyota, which went on to become the best-selling dedicated hybrid car ever made.

As we reported just last week, Honda discontinued sales of the Insight (as well as its two-door counterpart, the CR-Z) in Europe due to lagging sales. But now word has it that the Insight is being discontinued altogether. The report from Bloomberg notes that the Insight hasn't amounted to even a tenth of Prius sales, and even then, well over half of those sold were in the Japan Domestic Market. Honda reportedly has 237 days' worth of inventory stockpiled, but dealers are said to have been told to stop taking orders.

We've inquired with Honda for official word on the Insight's fate here in North America, but have yet to hear back â€" we'll update you when we learn more. If the model is indeed dead, it won't be a surprise â€" we exclusively reported in December that it killing the model was on the table.

Of course, it's possible that the Insight will remain in production for a while to service other markets â€" potentially Japan only. The decision casts the future of the CR-Z into doubt as well, as the three-door model relies on a similar generation of Honda hybrid technology, and it's the only model in the automaker's lineup that actually sells fewer examples than the Insight. One way or another, Honda would still have its Civic and Accord hybrids to sell, not to mention the FCX Clarity fuel cell and Fit EV. Either way, it appears the Insight's days are numbered.

Buying the right car is never easy, especially when you've decided to go down the pre-owned route. But here are some tips that might make life easier for you.

Buying a new car is always a more pleasant ordeal than buying a used one. The salesman is very friendly, answers all the questions you have for him and even get’s you your choice of coffee or tea. Within 15 minutes, you already know what you like and dislike about a certain car. If you do choose to buy the car, other than the regular financial documents submission and loan approval, there is nothing to worry about. All you have to do is wait for the call to come in saying when you can pick up the car.

When going down the pre-owned path, things aren’t as rosy. At every used car lot is a dodgy looking salesman who come hook or crook, wants to unload whichever car he can on some poor sucker who doesn’t know any better. As such many get burned when opting for a used car as they finally drive home a lemon- a car they had not interest in buying but were talked into getting anyway.

That’s a real shame as there are some really good runners out there that can not only offer bucket loads of driving enjoyment but will also be as reliable as a Toyota Corolla. To find such a car, here are tips you must follow:

Tip #1: Identify your budget
Find out how much you have to spend on a car then set aside RM7,500 for repairs for the next six months. You probably won’t need it if you’ve bought a good car but it helps to be prepared.

Tip #2: Know what you want to use the vehicle for
List down what you will be using the vehicle for. There is no point in buying a super cheap pick-up truck when all you are going to be doing are urban cruises. If it’s seating capacity you are after, then opt for an MPV. If all you need is a reliable and fuel-efficient car, get a compact hatchback.

Tip #3: Look through car classified ads and make a shortlist

Browsing the car classifieds section in Motor Trader magazine and it's online site will give you a rough idea as what is and isn’t in your budget. Make a shortlist of what you can afford.

Tip #4: Do your homework
After you’ve settled on a car. Do your research and find out as much as you can about it.
- How much does servicing it cost
- Are spare parts readily available
- Is the car prone to particular mechanical issues
- What do current owners have to say about it

Sometimes after completing your research, the car you’ve chosen doesn't turn out to be the dream car you that it would.

Tip #5: Visit the dealers’ lots
Look at as many examples of the car that you want. Scrutinize everything from the condition of the upholstery to the sound of the engine when idle. Ask as many questions as possible. Take a test drive if permitted. If you aren't happy with the condition of it, walk away. Never settle for anything less than your expectations.

Tip #6: If a deal seems too good to be true, walk away

Often, dealers will a few lemons that they can’t shift. It’s because they are accident vehicles or are naturally problematic. As such, to sell you the car, they will keep that information from you but tell you that your getting a darn good deal!

Then they will tell you that they are clearing the stock and that is why its going for such a price! This is total BS. So don’t believe it.

Tip #7: Seek the advice of counsel
It will be very helpful if you have a trusted mechanic on hand. If you don’t have one, you need to make friends with one soon as he will probably be the go-to-guy should something eventually need mending. Take him with you when inspecting a car. He will probably be able to spot potential issues that don’t seem obvious to the average Joe.

Tip #8: Haggle like there’s no tomorrow
Most dealers hike the prices of their cars, so take your best haggling skills with you and low-ball them if possible.

Tip #9: Make sure all the paperwork is in order

Once you’ve settled on a car, make sure the paperwork is all in order before signing on the dotted line.

That's all you need to remember. If you follow these rules and remain weary of used car dealers' tricks, you should be able to drive home your dream car.

Finding a reputable car mechanic can be tough but Carama’s online site has a whole list of certified mechanics you can trust. If you are interested, visit their site.

Mitsubishi Outlander Sport

Mitsubishi is recalling 733 of its 2013 Outlander Sports that were fitted with leather seat covers due to problems with the seat-mounted airbags. Apparently, the wiring for the airbags may have been routed incorrectly when the seat covers were installed at the port.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration bulletin, the issue only really crops up if owners adjust the height of the seats. Naturally, if the seat wiring is damaged, the airbag may not deploy in the event of a side impact.

The affected vehicles were all manufactured between July 20, 2012 and May 29, 2013. There have been no reported injuries or accidents due to this issue. Mitsubishi, meanwhile, will begin notifying owners, who will need to report to their local dealer for free inspections or repairs. Take a look below for the bulletin from NHTSA.

Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

SUMMARY:
Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2013 Outlander Sport vehicles manufactured July 20, 2012, through May 29, 2013 and equipped with leather seats. In the affected vehicles, the driver side seat mounted air bag wiring may have been improperly routed during the leather seat cover installation process.

CONSEQUENCE:
If the wiring is routed incorrectly, using the seat height adjustment may damage the wiring resulting in illumination of the air bag warning light. Subsequently, in the event of a crash necessitating air bag deployment, the driver side seat mounted air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.

REMEDY:
Mitsubishi will notify owners and dealers will inspect the wiring of the driver side seat mounted air bag and re-route the wire if necessary, free of charge. If the wire is damaged, the seat mounted airbag will be replaced, free of chagre. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-14-001.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

GERMANY-AUTO-COMPANY-VOLKSWAGEN-SCANIA

Volkswagen owns or has controlling interests in three commercial truck operations: besides its own, VW began buying shares in Sweden's Scania in 2000 and now controls 89.2 percent of its shares and 62.6 percent of its capital, then bought into Germany's Man in 2006 - in order to prevent Man from trying to take over Scania - and now owns 75 percent of it. The car company has managed to work out 200 million euros in savings, but believes it can unlock a total of 650 million euros in savings if it takes outright control of Scania and can spread more common parts among the three divisions.

It has proposed a 6.7-billion-euro ($9.2 billion) buyout, but according to a Bloomberg report, Scania's minority investors don't appear inclined to the deal. Although effectively controlled by VW, Scania is an independently-listed Swedish company, and a profitable one at that: in the January-September 2013 period its operating profit was 9.4 percent compared to Man's 0.4 percent. Some of the other shareholders believe that Scania is better off on its own and will not approve the deal, some have asked an auditor to look into the potential conflict of interest between VW and Man, while some are willing to examine the deal and "make an evaluation based on what a long-term owner finds is good," which might not be just "the stock market price plus a few percent." The buyout will only be official assuming VW can reach the 90-percent share threshold that Swedish law mandates for a squeeze-out.

Many of the arguments against boil down to investors believing that Scania's Swedishness and unique offerings are what keep it profitable, and ownership by the German car company will kill that. (Have we heard that somewhere before?) If Volkswagen can buy that additional 0.8-percent share in Scania, perhaps its buyout wrangling with Man will give it an idea of what it's in for: "dozens" of minority investors in the German truckmaker have filed cases against VW, seeking higher prices for their shares. It is likely only to delay the inevitable, though. If VW is really going to compete with Daimler and Volvo in the truck market, it has to get the size, clout and savings to do so.

The home of Dominick DeVito, a builder and renovator who has served two prison sentences but is once again working in the high end real estate market in Greenwich, Conn. Below, Round Hill Road, according to Christopher Fountain, is representative of the ills of not just an out-of-whack property market, but a wider business world that has gone ethically astray. (NEW YORK TIMES PHOTOS)

' One of the gaudy estates is owned by a hedge fund kingpin now residing in prison; others belong to a real estate investor just coming out of prison and an investment adviser who steered his clients and their billions to Bernard L. Madoff. Then, to cap it off, a guy in an 8,000-square-foot mansion is charged with crushing his wife's skull in with a baseball bat.

This is "Rogues Hill Road," or so Fountain has called this 3.5-mile stretch of asphalt. "All these aspirational schnooks came out here thinking that they had really made it," said Fountain, a real estate broker, blogger and lifelong Greenwich resident. "But then the tide went out and what you are left with is a bunch of crooks."

Believe it or not, Fountain actually makes a living brokering mega-mansion real estate deals to these so-called schnooks, among others.

And his blog, For What It's Worth, has attracted a cult following among those he lampoons â€" the financial titans who can afford to plunk down $5 million or more on a house but who nonetheless seem to appreciate his scabrous take on Greenwich residents' run-ins with the law, debt-fueled implosions or plain old bad taste.

Indeed, Fountain would seem to spend as much time selling schadenfreude as houses.

The essence of his complaint â€" that decades of easy money and ceaseless greed have created a glut of unsalable houses that will remain a blight on his hometown for many years â€" highlights one of the more curious anomalies of today's explosion in asset prices.

Though the Federal Reserve's policy of rock-bottom interest rates over the last few years has revived the value of many of the nation's subdivisions and sent stocks soaring to historic highs, it has prompted only modest interest in the over-the-top Greenwich mansion, a classic emblem of quick riches.

Fountain likes to point to the prominent Greenwich characters in the public spotlight as part of the problem. Topping Fountain's list of homeowners are Raj Rajaratnam, the hedge fund executive now serving an 11-year prison sentence on charges of insider trading, and Frederic A. Bourke Jr., co-founder of Dooney & Bourke, the high-end handbag accessories store, who has just been imprisoned for bribery and whose house is on the market for $13 million.

He also likes to skewer Walter Noel, a founder of Fairfield Greenwich, the investment firm that raised more than $8 billion for Madoff and subsequently became the target of investigations. Noel's 175 Round Hill address is just across the road from Bourke's home. The estate of Steven A. Cohen, whose hedge fund pleaded guilty to insider trading charges in November, is six miles east of Round Hill Road.

Fountain includes in his gallery plenty of lesser-known people pushed into bankruptcy after overreaching, borrowing millions to build 15,000-square-foot houses that no one wanted to buy.

Fountain's contention that the legal and financial troubles bedeviling Greenwich big shots have contributed to this slump â€" a view that is hotly disputed by his more established competitors â€" is more anecdotal than scientific. Still, the numbers are stark.

According to Trulia, the real estate website, the average price per square foot of a four-bedroom house sold in Greenwich in the last three months was $442, down 40 percent from a year ago and 11 percent from 2009.

Fountain says that more than 43 houses are on the market for at least $10 million â€" many of them unsold for more than a year.

What will it take to sell them?

"My rule of thumb now is divide the asking price by two," he said. "Although the owner's ego always makes that very hard to do."

Fountain began to vent on his blog about two years ago.

"I'm sure Greenwich attracted some nefarious characters back in the '50s and '60s, but the past decade has seen just a parade of sad sack crooks," Fountain wrote in a cri de coeur about how the 100-acre pastures and graceful mansions of his youth had been replaced by garish castles squeezed onto four-acre lots.

This was especially true, he felt, of Round Hill Road. "The road, to me, represents all that is sordid in our modern business world, money-grubbing poseurs putting on airs, until the handcuffs are slapped on."

It is tempting to dismiss this as an old-money lament from someone who missed out on the past decade's asset boom. While Fountain's father rode the train into Grand Central every morning to a Wall Street job at White Weld, a white-shoe investment firm that is now defunct, his own career path has been rockier.

After practicing law in Bangor, Maine, Fountain returned to Greenwich, where he spent most of his time defending small investors suing big Wall Street banks over dubious investment advice. He quit his job in 2000 after publishing his first book, "The New Millionaire's Handbook: A Guide to Contemporary Social Climbing." But his writing career stalled, and in 2001 he beat a retreat to selling houses. At the age of 60, Fountain has had three careers over the last decade and now rents a modest farmhouse in North Stamford, Conn., about 10 miles from Round Hill Road.

Nevertheless, his outbursts over new-money excesses in Greenwich have struck a vein, attracting readers who, Fountain says, include not just bankers and local real estate mavens but also followers in Europe and Asia. Cliff Asness, the billionaire hedge fund manager, has commented on the blog, and Fountain's taste for Greenwich gossip makes him all the more appealing.

"Fountain is great," said a defense lawyer for a legally encumbered Greenwich resident who has come in for punishment on the blog. "He is really catnip for all of us."

One investment banker who recently used Fountain to sell and buy a house appreciates his forthrightness.

"If he thinks the house you are trying to sell is worth $1 million and not $5 million he will tell you," said the banker, who spoke on condition of anonymity because his firm did not permit him to speak to the press. "Plus, his blog is hilarious."

Much of it consists of his rightward-leaning libertarian and politically incorrect rants in which he mercilessly sends up â€" in equal measure â€" what he sees as the big-government vanities of the Obama administration and the arrogance of those who think they have arrived just because they could secure a $10 million mortgage.

With his raspy growl of a voice, his pickup truck and his trusty bow and arrow, which he deploys when deer-hunting season rolls around, Fountain might be as close as Greenwich comes to a redneck. And even if it is all a bit of an act, the shtick â€" selling real estate requires self-promotion of one kind or another â€" has been great for his business.

"The hedgies love me â€" it's amazing how successful you can be if you tell the truth," he said. "Last year was great, but it really kicked off when I started going on about Walter Noel and Rogues Hill Road."

Still, in the competitive Greenwich market, where 1,000 people out of a population of 61,000 are licensed to sell houses, there are those who wonder if Fountain's footprint is as big as he contends. While the $20 million in sales that he and his business partner generated in 2012 put him in the top tier of the local broker pool â€" 2013 was a harder slog, he says â€" some rival agents say his presence was hardly felt in previous years.

They also reject his assertion that the market for big-ticket houses is in terminal decline.

"It really bothers me when he talks about the market like this because it is just not true," said David Ogilvy, the long-standing dean of the mansion market in Greenwich, who also has suffered his share of pokes on the blog.

To prove his point, Ogilvy ticks off his firm's sales in recent months: $13.4 million, $14.5 million, $24 million.

But other real estate agents say large houses often sell for far less than the asking price these days.

"This is still a buyer's market," said W. Harry Pool, a longtime investment banker turned real estate broker at Halstead Property in Greenwich. "If you want to sell your $10 million house, you really have to have the best $10 million house out there."

When he is not hunched over a laptop or in pursuit of deer, Fountain spends most of his days cruising around town in his pickup.

"I mean this is insanity â€" it's just a garish pile of bricks," he growled in the fall, as he drove past yet another 10,000-square-foot, slightly worse for wear and quite empty house. Like so many of its ilk, the house had been slapped together in a few months by a highly leveraged speculator; unable to pull in the $9 million needed to clear his debts, he had to surrender it to the bank.

And who signed off on the mortgage? "Patriot Bank, of course," Fountain said, spitting the words.

Of the many that have suffered a whipping from Fountain over the years, few have been subjected to as much sustained abuse as Patriot National Bank, the small regional lender that is based nearby, in Stamford, and bankrolled some of Greenwich's most egregious mortgage disasters.

"Patriot was in a pretty bad place when we took over," concurred Michael A. Carrazza, whose investment firm, Solaia Capital Advisors, rescued the bank in 2010 and restored it to good health. About one-third of the bank's loan portfolio, he said, consisted of nonperforming loans belonging to those owning high-end houses in and around Greenwich. Many of the loans went to highflying Wall Street titans, but a surprising number were directed to other borrowers, like Jianhua Tsoi, an acupuncturist and aspiring artist, who borrowed $40 million to build at least five houses in and around Greenwich, few of which he was able to sell.

Another Patriot borrower was Dominick DeVito, a builder and renovator of big homes who, when he took up residence on Round Hill Road in 2005, had already served a term in prison for real estate fraud.

After a profitable run, he became overextended, borrowing $6 million from Patriot in 2006 to build and flip his most spectacular house yet.

When the market collapsed, DeVito's bankers got cold feet, shut down his credit line and took possession of his nearly completed house. In 2009, he was sent to prison again on mortgage charges related to his earlier real estate activities in New York.

That DeVito â€" an Italian-American kid from the rougher side of Eastchester, N.Y., and with no college education â€" would end up on Greenwich's most prestigious thoroughfare is in itself a bit of a curiosity.

"I mean I was a paint contractor," said DeVito in an interview last year, as he took in the swimming pool, the rolling green hills and the white picket fence from the front porch of his house. "Now I am on Round Hill Road?"

Since his release from prison in early 2013, DeVito has jumped back into the real estate game with a vengeance â€" plying the back roads of Greenwich in search of unloved mansions that he might snap up, tear down and sell for a profit.

"I am done with the banks, though," he said. Instead, he is looking to rich people in Greenwich to put up the cash, with profits to be split down the middle.

"I mean," he said with one of his signature, flashing white grins, "it's not rocket science, is it?"

For the Wall Street types, however, headline-grabbing failure is harder to brush off.

Consider Joseph F. Skowron III, known as Chip, whose $8 million house is on 16 Doubling Road, just a few miles east of Round Hill Road. A hedge fund investor, he was caught in 2011 doling out envelopes of cash in return for nonpublic stock tips and was sent to prison for five years. Once worth around $20 million, he left behind a wife, four small children and a garage once full of high-end sports cars.

Having already paid $7.7 million in fines to the U.S. government, Skowron was ordered in December to pay $24 million in past wages â€" beyond the $10 million he has already paid to his former employer, Morgan Stanley.

When a guy named Chip, with a dimple in his chin and a luxurious home on the edge of the local country club, commits and then admits to an egregious financial crime, the knives come out quickly.

"How warped can a guy get just to accumulate a 10-car collection of speedsters and a big Greenwich house," wrote Fountain on his blog late last year, no doubt exaggerating the number of cars Skowron owns. "He now has plenty of time to ponder that question. Chump."

Peter Tesei, the town's first selectman, is quick to point out that a vast majority of Greenwich's 61,000 residents are citizens in good standing. But even some of those have their pasts. And perhaps no one is better qualified to add a bit of heft to Fountain's thesis than David A. Stockman, who was the budget whiz kid of the Reagan administration.

In his 712-page book, "The Great Deformation," Stockman argues that the relentless money-printing of the Federal Reserve has created a pernicious cycle of greed and excess.

"This is just not sustainable â€" the bubbles are getting bigger and the busts are becoming more traumatic," Stockman said. "And with each subsequent reflation the wealth and income is flowing into a smaller set of hands at the very tippy-top of the economic ladder."

Stockman speaks from experience.

In the 1990s, he was a top executive at the private equity shop Blackstone and erected a 15,000-square-foot estate in the gated Greenwich community of Conyers Farm.

When the debt bubble burst in 2007, Stockman's final private equity play â€" a car parts supplier â€" failed spectacularly. Federal prosecutors charged him with fraud but withdrew the case two years later.

In 2012, Stockman put his trophy home â€" with its 11 bathrooms, swimming pool and tennis court â€" on the market, asking $19.75 million.

Weak as the market was, the listing was removed â€" and Fountain is not surprised.

"For $9 million, it's a nice little house," he said. "But these types of houses don't age well. There is just too much horse crap out there on the polo fields."

Porsche Macan FactortyAfter over two years of construction and roughly 500 million euros ($684 million at current rates) invested, Porsche finally opened its Leipzig, Germany, factory expansion on February 11. The improvements to the plant are dedicated to building the Macan and include a new body shop, paint shop and assembly line that are advancing Porsche's goal to sell 50,000 Macan's per year. The company believes that the new model is going to push it to over 200,000 annual sales 3 years ahead of schedule, and the enlarged branch can support even more Macan production, if there is demand.

"We are totally convinced in the qualities of this location and that the Macan will be a marketing success," said Porsche Chairman Matthias Müller during the opening celebration. The company opened its Leipzig factory in 2002 to build the Cayenne and added Panamera production in 2009.

The Macan models are due to launch in the US this summer with prices starting at $49,900. Scroll down to learn all of the details about the Macan's Leipzig assembly plant.

PORSCHE CELEBRATES INAUGURATION OF ITS EXPANDED LEIPZIG PLANT

Atlanta/Leipzig. The drastically expanded Porsche plant in Leipzig officially opened today. Taking roughly two years from start to finish, the facilities now include a body shop and an ultra-modern paint shop in addition to the final assembly to accommodate the production of the new Porsche Macan with a capacity of 50,000 plus annually. The plant, which was designed to meet stringent environmental criteria, has been assembling the Cayenne and Panamera models of Porsche for the past 10 years. Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG stated, "The fact that Porsche has invested half a billion Euro in the Leipzig plant in addition to the original 250 million Euro, thus creating 1,500 new jobs, makes one thing clear: We are totally convinced in the qualities of this location and that the Macan will be a marketing success."

Porsche's fifth model line, the new Macan S and Macan Turbo, will arrive at U.S. dealers this summer and will become true sports cars in the rapidly growing segment of compact SUVs. The Macan S is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 340 hp and can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. The 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 in the Macan Turbo produces 400 hp and makes the car sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.

Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant

For its part, the UAW is blaming "outside interference" for its defeat.

In what is being characterized as a major blow to the United Auto Workers, workers at Volkswagen's plant in Chattanooga, TN have voted to reject union representation. The voting results â€" 712 opposed and 626 in favor â€" were released late Friday evening after a three-day secret ballot voting drive captured 89 percent of eligible workers. The results now go to the National Labor Relations Board for certification.

The UAW exerted a great deal of effort and money on the failed membership push in hopes that a successful campaign could trigger a wave of unionization at foreign auto factories popping up in the South from companies like Volkswagen, BMW, Honda, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Toyota. The closely watched drive piqued the nation's interest, and as Automotive News points out, "the election attracted widespread attention from third-party union supporters and opponents."

AN also points out that the failed drive will make Chattanooga something of an "outlier" in VW's portfolio of plants, as the vast majority of them are unionized, with most relying on special works councils that represent employees in important business decisions.

At present, VW assembles its Passat midsize sedan at the facility, but Chattanooga has been known to be in the running for a second model, an as-yet-unnamed crossover that is expected to be based on the three-row Crossblue Concept. It is not immediately clear what the union loss will mean for the plant's chances at gaining this second vehicle, but earlier this week, Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee ruffled feathers when he proclaimed that he had received assurances from VW that the company would select Chattanooga as the manufacturing home of the new vehicle if workers spurned the union's overtures.

For its part, the UAW is blaming "outside interference" for its defeat, with UAW Region 8 Director Gary Casteel saying, "Unfortunately, politically motivated third parties threatened the economic future of this facility and the opportunity for workers to create a successful operating model that would grow jobs in Tennessee."

Both the UAW and VW have released official statements on the results, which you can read below.

Historic election brings outside interference in the vote of Chattanooga Volkswagen workers

02/14/14 CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. â€" Workers at Volkswagen's Chattanooga plant today have voted against union representation that would have led to the establishment of a works council that would have been the first such model of labor-management relations in the United States.

At the end of voting on Friday, Volkswagen workers voted against joining the union in a vote of 712 to 626.

The decision follows three days of voting during an election supervised by the National Labor Relations Board and comes amid a firestorm of interference and threats from special interest groups.

"While we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the Volkswagen Global Group Works Council, Volkswagen management and IG Metall for doing their best to create a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union," said UAW President Bob King.

"We commend Volkswagen for its commitment to global human rights, to worker rights and trying to provide an atmosphere of freedom to make a decision," said UAW Region 8 Director Gary Casteel, who directs the union's Southern organizing. "Unfortunately, politically motivated third parties threatened the economic future of this facility and the opportunity for workers to create a successful operating model that that would grow jobs in Tennessee."

"While we're outraged by politicians and outside special interest groups interfering with the basic legal right of workers to form a union, we're proud that these workers were brave and stood up to the tremendous pressure from outside," said UAW Secretary-Treasurer Dennis Williams, who directs the union's transnational program. "We hope this will start a larger discussion about workers' right to organize."

VOLKSWAGEN CHATTANOOGA EMPLOYEES VOTE AGAINST UNION REPRESENTATION
Feb 14, 2014

Chattanooga, Tenn. (February 14, 2014) - Volkswagen Chattanooga employees have voted in a secret ballot election against United Auto Workers (UAW) representation. Participation in the election was 89 percent. 53 percent of the eligible employees who voted decided against the UAW as their bargaining representative in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) between February 12 â€" 14.

"On behalf of Volkswagen Group of America, I want to thank all of our Chattanooga production and maintenance employees for their participation in this week's vote. They have spoken, and Volkswagen will respect the decision of the majority," said Frank Fischer, CEO and Chairman of Volkswagen Chattanooga. "The election results remain to be certified by the NLRB," Fischer, said.

"Our employees have not made a decision that they are against a works council. Throughout this process, we found great enthusiasm for the idea of an American-style works council both inside and outside our plant," Fischer noted. "Our goal continues to be to determine the best method for establishing a works council in accordance with the requirements of U.S. labor law to meet VW America's production needs and serve our employees' interests," Fischer said.

Sebastian Patta, Vice President for Human Resources, said: "While there was intense outside interest in this election, our managers and employees inside the plant maintained high quality production and continued to work together in a calm and respectful manner."

"Our commitment to Tennessee is a long term investment. We look forward to continuing to work with the State of Tennessee and the City of Chattanooga to support job creation, growth, and economic development today and into the future," Fischer added.

About Volkswagen Chattanooga

Volkswagen has invested $1 billion in the local economy for the Chattanooga plant and has created more than 5,000 jobs in the region. National Corvette Museum

The eight cars swallowed up when a sinkhole erupted in the middle of the National Corvette Museum earlier this week will be sent to General Motors Design's Mechanical Assembly, which handles restorations for the GM Heritage Collection, in Warren, MI for full restorations. Vice President of Design, Ed Welburn, will oversee the process.

"The vehicles at the National Corvette Museum are some of the most significant in automotive history," said General Motors Executive Vice President of Global Product Development, Mark Reuss. "There can only be one one-millionth Corvette ever built. We want to ensure as many of the damaged cars are restored as possible so fans from around the world can enjoy them when the Museum reopens."

As for the museum itself, authorities say the damage caused by the sinkhole is repairable, and the building's structure and foundation remain in good shape. Recovery of the fallen vehicles can't begin, though, until engineers stabilize the area around the sinkhole, which could take a few weeks. Following that, it's expected to take four to six days to recover all eight cars.

A timeline for the total repair of the facility hasn't really been detailed, although in a press release, Executive Director Wendell Strode said is confident the museum will be ready to host its 20th anniversary celebration in August. "You won't even know that this happened," Strode said.

Chevrolet to Oversee Restoration of Historic Corvettes
Museum cars damaged in sinkhole collapse will be shipped to Warren Mich.

DETROIT â€" To help the National Corvette Museum recover from the massive sinkhole that opened under the facility this week, Chevrolet will oversee restoration of the Corvettes damaged. General Motors Design in Warren, Mich., will lead the project.

"The vehicles at the National Corvette Museum are some of the most significant in automotive history," said Mark Reuss, executive vice president of General Motors Global Product Development. "There can only be one 1-millionth Corvette ever built. We want to ensure as many of the damaged cars are restored as possible so fans from around the world can enjoy them when the Museum reopens."

Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design, will oversee the restoration.

When the cars are recovered, they will be shipped to the Mechanical Assembly facility, a small specialty shop within GM Design, where the best restoration approach will be determined. Mechanical Assembly has been part of GM Design since the 1930s, and today maintains and restores many of the vehicles in the GM Heritage Collection and GM's historic concept cars.

The National Corvette Museum is independently owned, and supported solely by charitable donations from enthusiasts. It is currently accepting donations on its website to assist in refurbishing the facility. Donations are tax-deductible.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4.9 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design, and high quality. Timeline Set for Sinkhole Repair and Car Recovery

During a press conference today on Corvette Boulevard, Mike Murphy with Scott, Murphy & Daniel construction provided an update and timeline on the work to be done.

Highlights of the press conference include:

- This is very common for this area, what's not common is for a sinkhole to swallow eight Corvettes.
- It is repairable. The building foundation and structure is in good condition.
- They will be securing the sinkhole and surrounding areas to ensure that even if we have sinkholes on the property in the future it will not affect the Museum.
- It will take 2-3 weeks to stabilize and secure the area (red spire, walls of the sinkhole) then the process of vehicle recovery will begin.
- They will be making sure the sinkhole is safe and that no further damage will occur before starting vehicle recovery.
- It will take 4-6 days to retrieve the vehicles
- After that, they will replace earth and the floor system
- They have a good plan and it takes action tomorrow with no problems foreseen

"We are confident that it will be done in time for the Museum's 20th Anniversary Celebration in August. You won't even know that this has happened," said Wendell Strode, Museum Executive Director

2013 World Car Awards

The 2014 World Car of the Year Awards are set to be handed out at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, meaning now is about the time we can start talking about finalists. The official list has been published and we'll admit, there are some surprising entries here.

Selected by 69 jurors from around the world, the list includes some obvious entries - the new Audi A3, Cadillac CTS and Ford Fusion/Mondeo, along with some other, unexpected cars. The polarizing Jeep Cherokee and Lexus IS both made the cut.

We have the entire list of potential winners available in the official WCOTY press release, and we've assembled a gallery of the finalists at the top of the page. You can also scroll down to see the finalists for the luxury, performance, green and design awards. Three finalists will be announced from each group at the Geneva Motor Show, before the winners are announced in the Big Apple.

The 2013 World Car of the Year (shown above) was handed to the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf. Scroll down for the official press release, and then be sure to head to Comments and let us know what you agree and disagree with.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS! WORLD CAR AWARDS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

February 11, 2014 - For Immediate Release

The countdown has begun for the 2014 World Car Awards (the WCAs) prize-giving ceremony to be hosted by the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) and Bridgestone Corporation on Thursday, April 17, 2014. Winners of the 2014 World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year will all be declared at this time.

The World Car Awards and the New York International Automobile Show earlier this year announced a five-year alliance that will keep the prestigious awards programme in New York City through 2018. The agreement marks the formalising of an eight-year relationship between WCA and NYIAS that has seen the awards programme grow to become the recognised number 1 premier automotive award.

Prior to the ceremony in New York, WCA's top three finalists in all award categories will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday, March 4th, 2014.

But first, a jury of sixty-nine (69) distinguished international automotive journalists selected the following finalists in the World Car of the Year, World Luxury Car and World Performance Car categories by secret ballot, based on their experience with each candidate as part of their professional work. For more details about our jurors, and their outlets, please visit our web site: www.wcoty.com and click < Jurors.

The five experts on the advisory panel are in alphabetical order: Phil Berg (USA - PopularMechanics.com); Richard Bremner (U.K. Autocar magazine), Claus-Peter Koeth (Germany - automobil-industrie.de); Yumi Kawabata (Japan-environmental journalist) and John Voelcker (USA - GreenCarReports.com)

Cars eligible for the 2014 World Car Design of the Year award are taken from the list of World Car candidates or may be included as a stand-alone entry provided the vehicle is available in quantities of at least 10 in one major market during the period beginning January 1, 2013 and ending May 30th, 2014. Candidates may be pre-production or all-new production.

Again, a design panel consisting of five highly respected world design experts was asked to first review each candidate, and then establish a short-list of recommendations for the jurors. The design experts are: Masatsugu Arimoto (Japan â€" Freelance design journalist); Silvia Baruffaldi (Italy â€" Auto & Design magazine); Gernot Bracht (Germany â€" Pforzheim Design School); Sam Livingstone (U.K. - Car Design Research and Royal College of Art) and Tom Matano (USA - School of Industrial Design at Academy of Art University in San Francisco)

The finalists for the jurors are:

2011 Toyota Prius

Toyota has announced a set of voluntary recalls covering 960,000 Prius, RAV4, Tacoma and Lexus RX350 models in the United States to address two separate issues. Worldwide, Toyota will have to recall a total of 1.9 million Prius cars.

The Prius recall affects about 700,000 2010-2014 models in the US, due to a fault in the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software. It says that the current software could result in high temperatures on certain transistors and possibly damage them. When it fails, the error forces the car into failsafe mode. Toyota says that in rare circumstances, it could even shut the hybrid system down while the car is being driven.

Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada told Automotive News that the software update should take about 40 minutes, and dealers would start to be notified about affected vehicles today. She also told them that the first reported glitch occurred in May 2011 in the US when the system overheated and the car entered failsafe mode. The affected cars were built between March 2009 and Feb. 5, 2014, according to Automotive News. Toyota says that it has received no reports of accidents or injuries caused by either fault.

This is the third major recall for the third-generation Prius. In February 2010, Toyota recalled the model to fix an anti-lock brake software glitch, and in June 2013, cars were recalled in the US to fix the brake pressure accumulator.

The second recall affects 260,000 2012 RAV4, 2012-2013 Tacoma and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 models due to an electronic flaw that could cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to intermittently shut off. Scroll down for Toyota's full announcement.

Toyota Announces Voluntary Recall of Certain Toyota Prius, RAV4, Tacoma and Lexus RX 350 Vehicles

February 12, 2014
TORRANCE, Calif., February 12, 2014 â€" Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., today announced that it is advising the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of plans to conduct voluntary safety recalls of approximately 700,000 Model Year 2010-2014 Prius vehicles and, combined, approximately 260,000 Model Year 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 vehicles sold in the United States to address two separate issues.

Toyota will update the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software on certain Model Year 2010-2014 Prius vehicles

The software's current settings could result in higher thermal stress in certain transistors, potentially causing them to become damaged. If this happens, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle can enter a failsafe mode. In rare circumstances, the hybrid system might shut down while the vehicle is being driven, resulting in the loss of power and the vehicle coming to a stop.

Toyota will update the skid control ECU software on certain 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012-2013 Lexus RX 350 models in order to address an electronic circuit condition that can cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to intermittently turn off. If these systems are off, standard braking operation remains fully functional.

Toyota has received no reports of accidents or injuries associated with either condition.

As part of these recalls, owners of affected vehicles will receive a software update free of charge. Owners will be notified by first class mail when the software updates are available at their dealers.

Detailed information is available to customers at www.toyota.com/recall and by calling the Toyota Customer Experience Center at 1-800-331-4331.

Lexus customers can visit www.lexus.com/recall or call the Lexus Customer Satisfaction Center at 1-800-25-LEXUS (1-800-255-3987).

2012 Audi Q7 TDI

Audi technical boss Ulrich Hackenberg has a huge job ahead of him if he's going to add more electrified models his employer's portfolio. Currently, the German company's electrified offerings amount to just the Q5 Hybrid in the US and the A3 E-Tron in Europe, but British auto mag Autocar is claiming that Hackenberg wants to add a Tesla Model X-rivaling electric version of the company's long-rumored Q8 utility vehicle to the plans. That E-Tron model, said to be a high-riding crossover with coupe-like lines, is expected to be Ingolstadt's CUV flagship, positioned just above the Q7 (pictured above).

Autocar further maintains that Q8 E-Tron will borrow its front- and rear-mounted electric motors (good for around 375 horsepower) from the recently revived R8 E-Tron, and the model could be ready as soon as 2017. This sporty CUV is expected to have a much greater range than the two-door electric sports car, however. Figure on about 370 miles thanks to room for extra batteries.

The still-not-confirmed Q8 range is expected to be offered with gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains, and will ride on the same platform as the Q7, albeit fitted with sleeker styling. Like all of Audi's upper-end offerings, it will make extensive use of aluminum for the body and chassis to keep weight down.

While word is that it's likely that Audi will build the Q8, the idea of dedicated EV version is still very much a rumor. Audi is pushing electrification because many cities, especially those in Europe, are instituting carbon-dioxide emissions limits within their city centers. However, whether Audi is willing to gamble on such a large electric vehicle is still up for debate.

2015 Subaru Legacy - front three-quarter view

Subaru has been one of the industry's hottest automakers, recording record sales month after month. Those handsome figures have come largely on the backs of its crossover lineup, however â€" models like Forester, Outback and XV Crosstrek have been carrying all the water. The Japanese marque has seen less noteworthy performance out of its midsize sedan, the Legacy, but a new one is slated to be revealed later this week at the Chicago Auto Show, and it hopes to improve the company's family sedan fortunes.

Leaked here in these first photos, the 2015 Legacy picks up some cues from the brash Legacy Concept revealed at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, but it loses some impact and gains a pair of rear doors versus the showcar. There's little new visual ground broken, but the overall look is more harmonious than its balloon-fendered predecessor. As is often the case, it has features that make us think of other cars, but overall, it looks to be a handsome (if conservative) design. We particularly like the sleeker roofline and the bold front grille treatment â€" the latter will likely serve well as the face of the next Outback.

Subaru has traditionally offered function-over-form interiors, and while the new dashboard remains visually staid, it looks to have picked up a number of nice new features, including improved HVAC controls, a new steering wheel and freshened touchscreen navigation system.

No word yet on what lurks underneath, but as ever, we're expecting standard all-wheel drive and a naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder at the bottom end of the range â€" either the company's 2.0-liter engine or its 2.5-liter four shared with the Impreza and Forester. No word on the likelihood of the six-cylinder model returning, but it's possible that the turbocharged WRX engine could appear under its hood as a premium offering.

General Motors Headquarters

Looking at the progress General Motors has made since it entered bankruptcy, it's easy to forget that the company still has a long way to go before it's the juggernaut it once was. A recent report from Reuters points out that, while GM is making money, it isn't making any gains in terms of US market share. Quite the opposite, really.

Consider this factoid: In 1963, nearly half of the cars sold in the United States were from Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, GMC or Pontiac. Now, the company's US market share is stagnant at 17.9 percent. That same number is half of just Chevy's 1963 market share. This is all despite GM going on a binge replacing or updating its models.

"Market share increases are not instantaneous," Mark Reuss told Reuters at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show. "We've got a lot of baggage. Don't underestimate what people though of us, or these brands, through these hardships and 30 years."

The reasons for the stagnant market share are numerous. Reuters points out that retooling of factories and a focus on limiting incentives are both good things for profit, but not necessarily for market share. There's also the troubling turnover of the brand's marketing department.

These issues don't change the fact that Chevrolet has lost 1.4 percent of its market share in two years, and that Cadillac - arguably GM's most improved brand overall - has lost 1.2 percent in the same period. Part of that can be blamed on GM's avoidance of fleet sales in favor of more profitable customer sales. "Our focus has really been on retail and that's where we've got the growth," said Alan Batey, GM's interim global marketing boss.

"We want to grow GM and that means growing market share and profits, but it's not at all costs," Reuss said.

Royal Customs Alphan One concept, front three-quarter view

What we have here is the work of Dubai tuner Royal Customs that is controversial even beyond its styling. The Middle East aftermarket house says it spent fourteen months developing a bodykit for the Porsche Cayman, and the results seem to be aimed at those who wish their coupe were a 918 Spyder - the nose, strake-filled and widened rear fender, carbon fiber wing and massive diffuser all cribbing some from Stuttgart's new hybrid supercar.

Even without a buyer, the Alpha One Concept is already controversial. When WorldCarFans posted on the Royal Customs car recently, German tuner Alpha-N Performance wrote in alleging that the Dubai package copies their design from two years ago, which was also called the Alpha One, a design with which it's clear the Dubai Alpha One shares numerous cues. We asked Royal Customs about its relationship to the Alpha One car, we were told, "Yes, there is a lot we can say about the remarkable similarities all of which will be explained by our press release by Mr. Emil from Autogespot. Please wait for the official release and you will have the full exciting story. It's an 'actual success story' and not a 'replication' story."

The response is referring to an "extensive report" on the car coming out of Autogespot. Royal Customs doesn't have the Alpha One Concept on its site yet, so we're still missing quite a few details on it, such as whether the Porsche engine has been given a similarly 918-ish workover. We do know that the company says each car takes 30 days to build and it will only build three of them, which is a number that should satisfy any haters and, even more so, its buyers. You can decide which side of the fence you're on by having a close look at it in the gallery above.

As the old saying goes, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Even worse than stats are carmakers’ fuel consumption claims, which sometimes seem laughably optimistic.

Car manufacturers don’t actually intend to fib (much) when it comes to quoting fuel consumption figures. In the real world it’s hard to achieve the numbers on the economy label mainly because cars are tested in a lab and under fairly unrealistic conditions, like having all ancillary loads like the lights, air-conditioner and so on switched off.

Manufacturers can also optimise their cars specifically to excel in the tests by setting gearbox shift points accordingly, or introducing features like Start-Stop engines, which drivers here may not always use.

Ultimately, good fuel consumption claims are like high PSLE scores â€" they don’t necessarily translate into success, but can be a strong predictor of it.

Take the new Toyota Corolla Altis. It's supposed to be able to reach 100km on 6.5 litres of petrol.

On a 50km-test drive around Singapore â€" taking in all manner of conditions from congested town traffic to a suburban run dotted with traffic lights to a jaunt on expressways â€" we failed to achieve that claimed mileage.

Instead, by driving carefully and in realistic conditions (we kept the air-con on at all times, for instance, and even kept the engine running while we made a quick stop at a durian stall in town) we saw 5.4L/100km on the Toyota's trip computer.

In other words, we consumed 17 percent less fuel than Toyota said we would.

630bigfish_fuel economy gauge

The Corolla Altis’ fundamental frugality helped us to squeeze out plenty of mileage, but an efficient car is only half the battle. These tips are the other half. Try them for yourself and watch those fuel bills shrink.

1) Keep your car in good shape with regular servicing

Clogged filters, fouled plugs, misaligned wheels… they all mess up fuel consumption. They’re all picked up and sorted during servicing.

2) Keep it stock

For the love of all that’s decent, adding a wing to your car does not make it go faster or look better. It’s just daft. And it adds wasteful drag. Same with wide tyres. Don’t bother.

3) Keep your tyres properly inflated

Speaking of those round, black things, always keep them properly inflated (check every other time you stop for fuel, at least). Flat tyres create extra rolling resistance (and increase fuel burn), wear out faster and offer lousy grip.

4) Look into the future

Behind the wheel, cultivate a sense of anticipation. If you train yourself to look much further ahead than usual, you can build up a mental map of what’s going on with the car around you… and what’s about to happen. By steering smoothly around these upcoming hazards you’ll be able to keep your momentum going.

5) Back off

630bigfish_keep your distance

Try keeping a much larger distance between yourself and the car in front of you than you're used to. You'll be surprised how much the extra buffer space will let you keep going at a smooth pace while the car ahead speeds up and slows down with the rest of traffic. It gives you a better view ahead, too, which helps with anticipation.

6) Keep it steady

You don't have to drive like a granny. Accelerate smartly to cruising speeds if you want, but the main goal is to hit a steady speed and then use the throttle sparingly to keep gliding along. It’s easier with enough of a buffer between your car and the one in front, so remember the two-second rule and use it.

7) Coast to coast

Many drivers only ever have their right foot on the accelerator or the brake pedal at any given time, but if you leave your foot completely off the pedals and let the car coast along, you'll be surprised how long its momentum will keep it going. Give it a go and you’ll wonder why you never did it before.

Citroën C4 Cactus

This is the new Citroën C4 Cactus, and it's what you get when you combine the designs of a Land Rover Range Rover Evoque and a Jeep Cherokee with a hint of woodie wagon. This is a fascinating and thoughtful little package, even if you aren't attracted by its appearance.

The Airbump system (those funny bumps on the doors designed to protect the sheetmetal from dings), which was originally shown on the Cactus Concept, is back for the production model, and will be available in four different colors. Citroën is pushing the customization angle as well, offering ten paint options matched with three different interior treatments.

Citroën isn't yet offering any information on what engines will be available, besides stating that start-stop-equipped PureTech gas engines and BlueHDi diesel will be featured, but it does offer some interesting metrics. Fuel economy and emissions for the diesel model sits at 91.1 miles per gallon on the European cycle and 82 grams of CO2 per kilometer, making it both exceptionally clean and fuel efficient. The gas engine, meanwhile, promises under 100 grams of CO2 per klick. While there's no doubting that this is down to a thrifty powertrain, Citroën's focus on weight reduction plays a big role as well.

Compared to the last C4, this car is 440 pounds lighter, tipping the scales at a scarcely believable 2,127 pounds. That is ridiculously light for any modern car, let alone a five-place crossover. Citroën cites a lightweight platform, an aluminum hood and other weight-saving tricks as contributing factors to this impressive figure. This is not some microcar, either â€" with a 102.3-inch wheelbase, its axles are only two inches closer together than a Ford Focus, though it's nearly seven inches shorter than the Blue Oval's hatchback overall. Key rivals are expected to include the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur.

There's much more on the Citroën C4 Cactus in the video and press release below. Have a look at those and the full gallery up top, and then hop into Comments and let us know what you think of this interesting offering from France.

Visual features that each highlight a given function â€" from Airbump® & wheel arch protection to the strong useable roof bars and the large panoramic glazed roof with its advanced heat protection.
Airbump®: A Citroën Exclusive

Airbump® technology neatly sums up the fundamental purpose of design, to combine style and practicality.

Fitted to the sides of the car and the bumpers, Airbump® adds a graphic structure to the pure, smooth bodylines of the New Citroën C4 Cactus. Available in four colours (Black, Grey, Dune & Chocolate), they can be matched with the ten body colours and three choices of interior trim (Stone Grey Ambiance, Habana Highlight & Purple Highlight) to offer a wide range of customisation options.

Above all they provide real day-to-day protection, as the supple TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) skin comprises air capsules to absorb impacts. Airbump® requires no specific maintenance and directly contributes to cutting vehicle repair costs.

The result is an attractive, functional innovation that makes city driving a more relaxing experience.

Dimensions

The proportions of the New Citroën C4 Cactus are optimised for attractive styling, space and driving comfort, boasting:

A 2.60m wheelbase (equivalent to a Citroën C4) placing the emphasis on space
The dimensions of a compact hatchback (length: 4.16m, width: 1.73m)
An ideal profile in terms of styling with 1/3 glazed areas & 2/3 side panels
Optimised height of just 1.48m for improved aerodynamics
Shorter overhangs placing the wheels in the four corners.
GREATER COMFORT

The first way to provide greater comfort is to create more space for the driver and passengers, and to de-clutter the cabin to provide a friendlier, more relaxing environment.

The low dashboard, with its horizontal lines, creates more space for the front passenger and offers generous and easily accessible storage. This result was achieved by adopting a fully-digital interface and optimising the dashboard layout:

'Airbag In Roof' technology â€" transferring the passenger airbag to the roof & deploying it over the windscreen, rather than positioning it in the dashboard
Conventional control buttons replaced by a 7-inch touchscreen, grouping together all the main vehicle functions (including the air conditioning, media, navigation, vehicle settings, telephone, connectivity & driving aids)
The traditional instrument cluster replaced by a digital screen
On Efficient Tronic Gearbox (ETG) versions, the gear lever is replaced by an 'Easy Push' system.
This simplified function comprises a 'Drive, Neutral, Reverse' (D,N,R) selection control on the lower fascia and steering wheel paddles to allow the driver to change gears manually.

The driver and front passenger both gain from this new interior architecture. The wide front seats are designed in the style of a sofa, to create a more comfortable and user-friendly ambience in the cabin.

In the rear, passenger legroom is similar to that of the Citroën C4. With an equivalent wheelbase, New C4 Cactus provides the same amount of space, but with more compact exterior dimensions. At just 4.16m long â€" for easy driving and handling in the city â€" the New Citroën C4 Cactus also provides generous boot capacity of 358-litres.

The second way to enhance comfort is through the on-board environment, which should be both relaxed and elegant. The clean design lines of the cabin underpin the interior styling, while the overall effect evokes the theme of travel, with a nod to the world of luggage design, including:

Door handles that take the form of luggage inspired leather straps
A storage compartment on the top part of the dashboard, with hinge fittings & a relief pattern
Seat upholstery, door trim & dashboard in a choice of three colours; Stone Grey, Purple Highlight & Habana Highlight

MORE USEFUL TECHNOLOGY

With a focus on ease of use, connectivity and accessibility, the technologies featured on the New Citroën C4 Cactus focus on the real needs of today's motorists.

A fully digital & intuitive touchscreen interface

Fitted as standard, a 7-inch touchscreen featuring seven main control buttons gives access to a full range of modern vehicle functions, including:

Automatic air conditioning
Media (digital radio, audio streaming, connection of mobile devices & functions to store music or display photos)
Navigation (speed limit display, traffic updates & efficient route options)
Driving aids (reversing camera, Park Assist, programmable speed limiter & cruise control)
Telephone (hands-free function via Bluetooth®, phonebook access, display of profile photos & double call management)
Connected services (Citroën Multicity Connect portal via a 3G connection)
Parameter settings (including an interactive on-board manual).
All these controls are grouped on a single screen, ensuring they are always easily accessible.

Amongst the useful technologies is the Citroën Multicity Connect application portal. Controlled from the 7-inch touchscreen, this portal offers a range of apps designed to making life easier for all occupants. Applications include:

'Fuel' app, allowing motorists to find the nearest and/or cheapest service station
'Yellow Pages' & 'Trip Advisor' apps, which help to locate hotels & restaurants
'Michelin Traffic' app, providing live traffic information
'Coyote' app, providing alerts on high-risk roads
All applications are fully integrated with the driving interface, taking account of all vehicle-related information (position, speed, route, fuel level, etc.), to provide the right information at the right time and anticipating driver needs in all circumstances.

100% useful driving aids

For a more relaxed drive, the New Citroën C4 Cactus features a range of driving aids to make life easier:

Park Assist carries out parking manoeuvres automatically when a suitable space has been identified.
The driver only needs to operate the accelerator & brake
A reversing camera makes light work of parking manoeuvres with the image displayed on the touchscreen, providing greater visibility
Hill-Start Assist keeps the vehicle stationary for two seconds on a slope, allowing the driver to easily proceed on gradients of over 3% without the vehicle dropping back when the brake pedal is released
Static cornering lights provide an additional beam of light to illuminate the inside of bends, improving visibility & safety at corners & junctions
The Citroën eTouch service includes a localised emergency & assistance call system, depending on the country. These two 24/7 services are free for the life of the vehicle and feature an integrated SIM card. In the event of an incident or accident, they ensure that the emergency services can locate & reach the vehicle promptly.
Technological Innovations for increased comfort

The New Citroën C4 Cactus boasts a large panoramic sunroof featuring advanced heat protection (the best available on the market), designed to filter light and reflect heat. With protection equivalent to category-4 sunglasses, the sunroof provides effective protection from UV rays, while excellent light, heat and acoustic protection eliminates the need to fit a sunblind. As a result, vehicle weight is reduced by 6kg and weight distribution is also improved â€" the centre of gravity is lowered for a more balanced ride.

Driving comfort is further enhanced, thanks to 'Smart Wash' â€" a simple, ingenious innovation, removing visibility issues caused by washing the windscreen. With this technology, windscreen washer nozzles are built into the tips of the wipers and release just a small amount of fluid. This helps to maintain visibility and also halves the amount of fluid required compared to a conventional system.

REDUCED COST OF OWNERSHIP

While delivering more of what really counts for customers, the ownership proposition with the New C4 Cactus needed to be one that remained affordable. A vehicle budget includes not only the purchase price, but also the running costs (fuel, servicing, etc.) and Citroën's objective was to deliver an all-round cost-effective solution.

Supporting customers from purchase through to resale

Adopting an approach similar to mobile phone price plans, Citroën brings New C4 Cactus customers a range of funding options in the form of a monthly flat-rate or mileage-based payment, depending on the country.

This innovative service covers all expenditure, excluding fuel, during the period of the agreement: finance, insurance and servicing. For a fixed monthly payment, customers can select their preferred trim level (equipment, engine, etc.) and the level of service they require (type of cover, all-in or mileage based, etc.) without exceeding their budget.

Cutting fuel consumption

To reduce fuel consumption it is important to increase efficiency and to do away with the superfluous. By making the vehicle lighter, Citroën has been able to adopt smaller latest-generation engines, which reduce fuel consumption whilst maximising driveability.

The New Citroën C4 Cactus weighs just 965kg, 200kg less overall compared with a Citroën C4, a reduction achieved thanks to:

A compact, lightweight platform
Small latest-generation engines meeting the future Euro 6 standard (PureTech petrol & BlueHDi diesel with Stop & Start)
High-performance materials including very high yield-strength steel & aluminium front & rear beams
Weight-reducing features such as an aluminium bonnet, pop-out rear windows (-11kg) & a single-piece folding rear bench (-6kg)
As a result, the New Citroën C4 Cactus is available with a petrol version emitting less than 100g/km of CO2 and a diesel version emitting just 82g/km with impressive fuel consumption of 91.1mpg.
Breakthrough reductions in cost of ownership

Looking beyond fuel consumption, Citroën has reduced the overall running costs of the New C4 Cactus by almost 20% compared with the benchmark in the compact hatchback segment. As a result of the efforts made to optimise weight, the need to replace wear parts due to normal wear and tear has been significantly reduced. Repair costs are also considerably lower, thanks to Citroën's Airbump® technology.

PHOENIX -- Buying a house?  Then forget zero down; those days are gone. Now, you pretty much have to have a down payment.

But that's the first problem. Lenders want to know exactly where your down payment came from.

"I don't care what the reason is," says Diane Gerdes, a Realtor here in the Valley. "If you had it in a jar in the back yard. If your 'baby daddy' owed you the money and you put it in the account cash, it doesn't matter,"  Gerdes says.

If you can't document where the money came from, it's one of the reasons your mortgage can and will be denied. "If you're planning on buying a home, you need to put it in the bank now and make sure it stays there for at least 90 days," Gerdes advises.

Another reason your mortgage might be denied is a career change right before you apply for a loan. "If you want to get your loan declined, then go quit your job and go find another one," Gerdes says.

Gerdes says even if you changed jobs, just be up-front, and tell them. "Be honest," she says, "If you had a job gap, quit your job, stayed home for a couple of months or lay on the couch and watched TV, that's fine. You just need to let your loan officer know."

Here's another way to get denied. Don't provide all the paperwork. If they want your tax returns from 2010, for example, cough them up. "If they've asked you for something, and you're like, 'No, my cousin George didn't have to provide that, why should I?' Then, you're not going to get a loan," she says.

And finally, do you really want your mortgage denied?  Have shoddy credit and and don't pay your bills on time. "If you're a sloppy payer, you haven't paid your credit cards or your car, it's going to be difficult for you to get a home loan," Gerdes says.

She says we now live in a new era. It's one where lenders are stricter, and where consumers need to cooperate more.  "If you want to make sure you don't get your home loan, these are the tips you need to follow," Gerdes jokingly says.

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) - A car goes through a lot in the winter, first by driving through snow and ice and now the frigid temperatures.

Mechanics at Christmas Automotive Repair in Boardman said winter is taking a toll on cars.

"I do fuel pumps mostly almost every day," Tom Christmas said.

Christmas said when it's this cold out, motorists should not run their gas tank down to E and should have at least a quarter tank.

"The pumps run and they get very hot and then you go put gas in it and it cools it down real fast and that's what ruins the pumps. Then you're talking $500, $600 to put a fuel pump in," Christmas said.

People also should check their antifreeze level, which should be done when the oil is changed.

"If your antifreeze is weak, it gets down below zero, it freezes. And when it freezes, it expands and when it expands, it cracks blocks," Christmas said.

The service shop at  Sweeney Chevrolet in Boardman is seeing a lot of cars come in with low tire pressure.

"The sensors in the tires are very sensitive. Like if they go down maybe just 2 pounds, it will kick a light on. It's not like there's anything wrong with it. Just the cool weather will make it fluctuate," said Anthony Valiquette of Sweeney Chevrolet.

The dealership said to always check the car's battery and fluids.

"Fluid exchanges. Those are very common as well cause the fluids will weaken over time and it's always a good idea to get them changed at the due mileage," Valiquette said.

Before driving, motorists should let the car warm up a bit so the oil and fluids can lubricate everything.

If the windshield wipers are frozen to the window, tap them loose with a snow scraper.

"Cause the first thing you do, you jump in your car and turn the wipers on. If they're frozen to the window, it breaks the wiper arms and the wiper motors," Christmas said.

2014 Jeep Cherokee Restless Super Bowl Commercial

The second of three spots produced by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for this year's Super Bowl featured the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Aired during the game's half time show, the minute-long ad didn't strike as anything new or innovative from an automaker with a reputation for above average Super Bowl spots, but it did show the controversially styled Cherokee in the best light possible.

Called Restless, the commercial shows young, adventurous types doing the sorts of things that young, adventurous types do: surfing, skateboarding, cliff jumping, staring off into the sky with a pensive expression, etc. Scroll down to watch Restless for yourself and let us know in Comments if Jeep managed to hold your attention during half time.

Chrysler and Jeep® Brands Air Videos "America's Import" and "Restlessness" During Super Bowl XLVIII

- Chrysler brand commercial features iconic American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan, who narrates apologue that celebrates "America's Import"
- Chrysler brand commercial introduces "America's Import" tagline specific to the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200 #AmericasImport
- Jeep® brand debuts "Restlessness" for all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee; commercial speaks to the global human spirit and desire to "Go. Run. Act. Find. Dare." #StayRestless

February 2, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Today, the Chrysler and Jeep® brands each introduced new commercials during Super Bowl XLVIII. The commercials appeared during halftime (Jeep brand) and third quarter (Chrysler brand) of the game.

Chrysler Brand's "America's Import"
The two-minute commercial reveals the new "America's Import" tagline for the all-new 2015 Chrysler 200. It features legendary American musician/singer/songwriter Bob Dylan â€" who in a collaborative first for the artist â€" not only appears in the commercial and provided one of his tracks, "Things Have Changed," but also narrates the apologue that celebrates "America's Import."

The commercial features gritty, industrial imagery from Detroit, providing glimpses of the men and women from past and present committed to building world class automobiles â€" including footage at Chrysler Group's renovated Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP) â€" interspersed with bold American imagery covering the nation's most iconic paved roads, beaches, diners and other well-known personalities including Dylan himself (past and present), James Dean, Julius Erving and Marilyn Monroe.

The spot also features footage of Dylan filmed in the greater Los Angeles area, in the new Chrysler 200, and in iconic surroundings suggested by the songwriter, including the Bradbury Building (the city's oldest landmarked building).

In the commercial, Dylan echoes an honest, pure and poetic recant of America's can-do spirit, admiring, and celebrating the role the automobile and those who make it have played in its history. Narration includes the following:

"America's Import"
Is there anything more American than America?
'Cause you can't import original.
You can't fake true cool.
You can't duplicate legacy.
Because what Detroit created was a first
and became an inspiration to the... rest of the world.
Yeah...Detroit made cars. And cars made America.
Making the best, making the finest, takes conviction.
And you can't import, the heart and soul, of every man and woman working on the line.
You can search the world over for the finer things,
but you won't find a match for the American road
and the creatures that live on it.
Because we believe in the zoom,
and the roar, and the thrust.
And when it's made here, it's made with the one thing
you can't import from anywhere else. American...Pride.
So let Germany brew your beer,
Let Switzerland make your watch,
Let Asia assemble your phone.
We...will build...your car.

Viewers can keep up with the excitement by following #AmericasImport on Twitter and Instagram. The broadcast commercial can be viewed at the Chrysler brand's official YouTube site.

The Chrysler brand's "America's Import" was created in partnership with Global Hue's offices in both New York and Detroit.

Jeep Brand's "Restlessness"
The sixty-second "Restlessness" continues the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee launch and the brand's "Built Free" advertising campaign which launched in October 2013. Dimensionalized through the lens of those who embrace a restless spirit, coveting what life has to offer in a continuous pursuit of adventure, the commercial furthers the story of those who refuse to sit still. Set to breathtaking footage, the commercial captures the Jeep Cherokee as it is juxtaposed with vibrant images of humanity that illustrates the simple yet impactful moments that the restless seek. The narration begins with:

Are you among the restless many?
Each tick of the old clock,
a reminder, that stillness is what actually kills us.
When the walls close in, do you climb out?
When the road ends, do you go on?
Restlessness starts with an itch.
And ends in progress.
It is your ambition refusing to be bottled up.
Begging for a little blue sky time.
Genetics have a voice that you can only deny so long.
They scream "GO. RUN. ACT. FIND. DARE."
Where you go when you have the itch is free will.
How you get there, is why we made the new Cherokee.

The Jeep brand, in creating a conversation with consumers, reiterates an important question from the spot, are you among the restless many? It invites them to celebrate their "Restless" spirit through their stories, their journeys and their discoveries through Twitter at #StayRestless. The broadcast spot can be viewed at the Jeep brand's official YouTube site.

The Jeep brand's "Restlessness" was created in partnership with Dallas-based The Richards Group.
