The first time time General Motors CEO Mary Barra went to Washington to answer Congress' questions about the Chevrolet Cobalt ignition switch situation, everyone walked away light on answers and heavy on parody, more parody and yet more parody. Barra explained that she was waiting for the results of a months-long internal GM investigation headed by ex-US Attorney Anton Valukas before going into more detail. Now that the report is out â€" and already being assailed â€" Barra will head back to Congress to face another round of queries.
This time, however, Barra goes with a declared mission to "update (the committee) on the actions GM is taking in response to the ignition switch recall," in the words of GM spokesperson Greg Martin. The Detroit News said "GM's Barra promises answers this time," but reading between the corporate and Congressional press release phrasings, Barra and her interlocuters might still be at cross purposes. The Martin statement says Barra will be explaining what GM is doing in response to the report, but the statement issued by two House Representatives suggests they still want answers from the last hearings, like who knew what and when did they know it, saying that the the Valukas report leaves "many questions remain unanswered about the recalls."
The showdown goes down before a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee at 10 in the morning next Wednesday.
