With the Belgian Formula One Grand Prix happening this weekend, Shell reminded a few guests what the Spa-Francorchamps track and Belgian countryside were like in 1955. That year the petroleum company made a 30-minute movie about the grand prix - this is back when the track was called the Francorchamps National Circuit, near the town of Spa, and a list of its important corners didn't include a mention of Eau Rouge - where it was doing the same thing it still does today: working on fuels and lubricants via its technical partnership with Ferrari.

To create the mood, journalists were invited to a vintage cinema where they mingled with Ferrari F1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa and other extras in period fifties gear, and watched a screening of 1955 Belgian Grand Prix. SHELL RELIVES THE WORLD OF 1955 FORMULA ONEâ„¢

Today Shell offered media the opportunity to relive the budding years of Formula One, taking over a 1950s cinema in Malmedy for a special screening of its '1955 Belgian Grand Prix' film.

Scuderia Ferrari official drivers Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa joined guests at the retro venue to be immersed in a bygone era, surrounded by vintage 1950s cars, traditional cocktails and a boogie-woogie band in the evocative setting.

The Scuderia Ferrari drivers swapped their modern race suits for 1950s drivers outfits to give media a one-off photo opportunity before ushering guests into the theatre for the screening of the '1955 Belgian Grand Prix' film â€" celebrating over 60 years of the Shell technical partnership with Ferrari in Formula One.

The two companies first joined forces to contest the inaugural Formula One World Championship together in 1950, a season that marked the beginning of a new era in global motorsport. Since then the collaboration has become one of the most long-standing and successful partnerships in the history of motorsport, contesting over 500 races together and winning 12 Drivers' Championships and 10 Constructors' Championships.

"We are very proud of our partnership with Ferrari and this event is a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase where our shared history began," commented Richard Bracewell, Shell Global Sponsorships Manager. "We have been working together for over 60 years and, although many things have changed in that time, the importance of this partnership to us is as great now as it was then."

With a period band setting the scene, guests were transported back in time to the early years of Formula One, taking in the sights, sounds, smells and feel of the young World Championship. Cocktails in hand, guests were free to explore the selection of classic 1950s cars, including a Ferrari 250 GT Boano, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce, a Lancia Aurelia B24 Spider and a Fiat 600 Multipla.

As 1950s policemen walked the beat and grease-stained mechanics tinkered with the cars, members of the media were invited to bring the '50s setting to life by dressing in period clothing, with leather jackets, bow ties and fedoras proving the fashion hits of the day.

About the '1955 Belgian Grand Prix' film
Shell partnered Ferrari in the inaugural Formula One World ChampionshipTM of 1950, a season that ushered in the beginning of a new era in global motorsport. In that time, Shell has become not only the most successful oil company in the history of motorsport but one of the most recognisable and ever-present brands at race tracks around the world.

The film was made by Shell to underline its commitment to and involvement in the sport to fans and customers alike. This practice continues today with Shell's Title Sponsorship of the 2013 Formula 1 Shell Belgian Grand Prix â€" a classic race on the calendar and the backbone of Shell's work within Formula One and with Ferrari.

In 1955 Shell supported several teams, of which Ferrari was one, but since then, Shell has gone on to develop an exclusive relationship with the Italian team that is unrivalled in the sport.

The Technical Partnership has become synonymous with power, performance and reliability in modern motor racing and is an aspirational symbol whose roots are firmly based in a shared passion between the two companies.

The screening of the '1955 Belgian Grand Prix' film serves as a special reminder of the longstanding history of Shell's Technical Partnership with Ferrari in Formula One within the context of the Shell Belgian Grand Prix.

For nine years, Diesel Power magazine has run the Diesel Power Challenge, this year's grindfest being "a week-long torture test that features seven events, nine trucks, 8,000 horsepower, and nearly 15,000 pound-feet of torque." The road to being crowned "the most powerful truck" starts with a dyno run, and then continues through the completion of a CDL-style obstacle course, an eighth-of-a-mile drag race while towing a 10,000-pound trailer, a quarter-mile drag race without a trailer, a fuel economy test in the mountains and finally a sled-pulling test through a 300-foot-long packed-mud pit.

What kind of trucks get into such a fight? Last year's winner, for instance - who upgraded his truck this year to prove he didn't "luck into the win" - drives a 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty with a 6.4-liter Power Stroke V8 upgraded with a custom intake, Elite Diesel triple turbos and a two-stage nitrous system. Another competitor has a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 powered by a 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six, upgraded with Garrett turbos, dual-stage nitrous, a seven-inch exhaust stack and twin fans built into the bed to cool the Sun Coast Omega transmission. The numbers on that truck: 1,255 horsepower, and 2,063 pound-feet of torque at the wheels. Naturally, as the image above might suggest, things don't always end well.

You'll find all five videos covering this years challenge below. A scene in the dyno video sums it all up perfectly: a competitor leaves his nitrous on too long and the crew is treated to some ominous poppings, he leans out the window, throws both hands up and shouts, "Amer'ca!"

World's Greatest Drag Race video

As part of Motor Trend's Best Driver's Car competition, the buff book has held its third iteration of the World's Greatest Drag Race. With an airfield and a dozen of the world's finest performance cars at its disposal (oh, and a helicopter), the MT team did what any good group of enthusiasts would do, and tried to figure what car could cover a quarter mile the quickest. World's greatest drag race, indeed.

EVO tests Porsche 911 GT3 vs Nissan GT-$

The Porsche 911 GT3 has always been a favorite among auto journalists and car enthusiasts alike, but with the introduction of the new 991-generation GT3, which is the first GT3 with electric power steering and no manual gearbox option, how does it stack up to the competition from McLaren and Nissan?

Evo's Jethro Bovingdon attempts to answer that question by pitting the rear-engine Porsche against the mid-engine McLaren MP4-12C on a racetrack and the front-engine, all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R on some amazing, twisty European back roads. We won't give away the victor of either comparison, but we will say that, in Evo's test, the McLaren's 141-horsepower advantage doesn't give it as much of an edge over the Porsche on a racetrack as one might think, and the lack of a manual gearbox and the inclusion of electric power steering on the GT3 isn't detrimental to enjoying the car on a back road.

Ford F-150 paint process - video screencap

Ford 3D Dirt Detection Technology - video screencapKnowing how the bacon gets made rarely entices us and, in the same vein, the same usually goes for knowing about how new cars get painted. But in both instances, however, quality â€" or a lack thereof â€" is instantly obvious. In terms of the latter, Ford is showing off its new paint quality process with 3D Dirt Detection Technology to find imperfections in vehicle paint more easily and more quickly.

This process â€" being performed on the F-150 SVT Raptor above â€" uses 16 computer-controlled cameras to create a three-dimensional model (inset) of the vehicle to detect flaws in the paint including dirt particles, which can then be buffed out manually. Ford says this new technology cuts down on time spent looking for paint flaws and gives workers more time to correct those that are discovered.

Currently, Ford only uses its 3D Dirt Detection Technology system at three factories (the Dearborn, MI facility, along with those in Louisville, Kentucky and Valencia, Spain), but it will soon spread to five more plants in North America. Ford has released a video and press release for this innovative and unexpectedly interesting process, both of which are posted below.

-Digital imaging system analyzes more than 3,000 images in 15 seconds to identify dirt particles. Previously, paint inspections were based solely on the human eye

-This year, the dirt detection technology launches at three more Ford assembly plants in North America, followed by two additional assembly plants in 2014

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 22, 2013 â€" Here's the dirt on Ford's new paint technology: There isn't any.

New Ford F-Series models are the latest vehicles to benefit from the company's industry-first dirt detection technology to ensure optimal paint and surface quality. The system uses high-resolution cameras and reflected light to digitally identify surface imperfections finer than a grain of salt in final vehicle assembly, and to cue operators where to polish and buff out imperfections.

By using dirt detection technology, Ford improved paint quality and reduced customer complaints of vehicle surface finish by 82 percent within one year, as measured by customer warranty data for F-Series models produced at the company's Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Mich.

"This system ensures better paint jobs and surface finishes for Ford customers around the world," said Tom Dougan, project manager, global paint applications at Ford.

How it works
Ford's dirt detection technology takes microscopic scans of each painted vehicle surface, and then cues final assembly operators to address repairs where necessary. In the past, paint and surface inspections were based on human-eye examination.

The 3D imaging system applies varying degrees and angles of light while scoping the paint surface of vehicle bodies to identify dirt in paint and other irregular paint conditions. High-resolution images â€" 3,150 images are captured in 15 seconds for every vehicle made â€" are stitched together for a full 3D image that is digitally compared to a perfect computer model.

The dirt on the dirt
Dirt particles in paint are difficult to manage with conventional quality control methods. Minute particles can enter a shop floor from multiple environmental sources, machinery or workers, which makes paint quality one of the toughest variables to control in production. Along with Dearborn Truck Plant, the automated inspection system is now being used in the United States at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant.

"This is one of the most exciting integrations of optical science and digital technology in the automotive industry," said Dougan. "By combining innovations in vision technology, processing speed and software, Ford continues to invent new technologies that give our customers better paint quality and surpass competitor offerings."

Globally, dirt detection technology is used at three Ford assembly plants. Here are the plants and the vehicles built there:
