Cadillac Elmiraj Concept

Two years ago, Cadillac absolutely floored us with the debut of its gorgeous Ciel concept at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. And since that droptop four-door's debut, we've seen plenty of its design language worked into the latest Cadillac products. Now, we're seriously hoping that history will repeat itself with this stunning new Elmiraj coupe concept, which makes its first public appearance in Monterey this week.

Cadillac states that the Elmiraj concept simply showcases the next step forward for the brand's Art & Science design DNA, and doesn't necessarily preview an upcoming model. But if you told us the Elmiraj was a conceptual look at the next-generation CTS Coupe, or a smaller, two-door version of a new flagship, we'd believe you. At 207 inches long, 76 inches wide and 55 inches tall, its dimensions are only slightly larger than the current two-door CTS.

Cadillac Elmiraj ConceptRegardless of what the Elmiraj does or does not become, it's certainly a fantastic modern interpretation of the classic GT formula with its short front overhang, long hood, rakish roofline and petite rear deck. The strong character lines running along the sides and exaggerated 22-inch wheels round out the beautiful coupe, and Cadillac's signature vertical LED lighting elements are found at the front and rear. Also take note: the badge on the grille is a crest without a wreath, basically confirming our earlier report.

The Elmiraj wears Cadillac's new Vsport model designation, and for good reason. Under the hood is an all-new, twin-turbocharged 4.5-liter V8, estimated to produce 500 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. That should make for a rather quick coupe, even with the roughly 4,000-pound curb weight of this concept.

Inside, the Elmiraj follows the proper GT theme with a four-person seating configuration and a raised center console that spans the length of the cabin. Backlit titanium trim nicely contrasts the caramel-colored leather upholstery, and the interior is finished with fallen Brazilian Rosewood accents, which are hand-cut into three-dimensional sections for "perfect control of the grain flow," according to Cadillac. Special attention was paid to the rear seats, as well, where a new "valet feature" moves the front seat up a full 10 inches, and slides the rear seat four inches forward to meet the passenger. The rear seat then moves back into its original position with the passenger in tow. And hey, those rear seats even recline.

We'll have more photos and impressions of the Elmiraj as part of our Monterey coverage this weekend. For now, scroll down for Cadillac's official press blast, as well as a pair of videos showing the new concept from every angle (and in motion).

Elmiraj Concept Explores Top of Cadillac's Range

CARMEL, Calif. â€" Cadillac today revealed the Elmiraj Concept, a grand coupe expressing the pure enjoyment of driving and exploring new dimensions for Cadillac's ongoing expansion. The Elmiraj Concept showcases a new vision for luxury driving and the top of the brand's expanding range.

"Cadillac is fueled by the creativity of our designers, led by Ed Welburn," said Bob Ferguson, senior vice president, Global Cadillac. "Elmiraj provides a look inside the Cadillac Studio on how we envision performance and luxury for the next generation of luxury drivers."

A modern update to the classic format of a two-door grand coupe, Elmiraj is a pure expression of streamlined design and engaging rear-wheel drive performance.

At 205 inches (5207mm) in overall length, Elmiraj is four-seat coupe with presence and poise. Taking up from where the memorable Ciel Concept left off, Elmiraj is a statement of pure luxury and performance with a purposeful character and proportion.

The concept advances Cadillac's philosophy of dramatic design and performance, and its commitment to lightweight, agile cars. Elmiraj is constructed with chassis and structural elements of an ongoing Cadillac vehicle development project slated for future production. This new vehicle architecture expands the brand's commitment to lightweight RWD performance, exemplified in the ATS sport sedan and the all-new and elevated 2014 CTS launching this fall in the U.S.

"Elmiraj advances Cadillac's provocative modern design and performance, contrasted with bespoke craftsmanship and luxury," said Mark Adams, Cadillac design director. "It explores performance driving, as well as how we're approaching elevating the Cadillac range and new dimensions of Art & Science philosophy."

Elmiraj is powered by a 4.5-liter twin turbocharged V8 delivering an estimated 500 hp. The engine takes the baseline technology from the new Cadillac Twin Turbo V6 featured in the upcoming 420-hp 2014 CTS Vsport edition, and expands it to the classic performance format of a V8 engine.

Dramatic Exterior Proportion

With a heritage of imaginative designs, Cadillac approaches concept cars as a method for projecting design forward rather than simply exaggerating or "teasing" future production models. Elmiraj was created from this mindset, and therefore suggests new territory for Cadillac Art & Science.

"This concept is the second chapter, following the Ciel Concept, of our exploration of the personas of true luxury," said Clay Dean, executive director of advanced design. "This project originated around the simple persona of "the drive," or the visceral experience of driving a great luxury coupe. It's an expression of the confidence and poise you feel driving a high-performance car, which we feel is an essential element of top-level luxury."

The dramatic proportion communicates power and performance. A long dash-to-axle front profile, a Cadillac signature, gives the coupe a performance-oriented form. The long wheelbase and clean body side characterizes the car's spacious dimensions and elevated status.

The fast cabin sits within a fuselage where taut fender lines spline through the full sectioned body, literally blending art and science. Cadillac's vertical light signature is represented in both the headlamp graphic and tail lamp. A gently applied feature line in the sheet metal extends the full length of the body side, connecting those vertical front and rear elements.

"Elmiraj is about poise and proportion," said Niki Smart, lead exterior designer. "We wanted a mature statement for Cadillac, where simplicity and subtle adornments create a purposeful presence."

Elmiraj contains design elements emphasizing Cadillac's capabilities for engaging driving performance in its production portfolio. Two vents in the car's long hood are functional, acting as hot air outlets for the twin turbo engine. Elmiraj has 22-x-9-in. aluminum wheels are backed by large ceramic brakes with Cadillac monoblock calipers. The car's rich blue exterior finish wears the brand's Vsport designation, Cadillac's new level slotting directly under the high-performance V-Series.

The face of Elmiraj experiments with new visual elements, yet is unmistakably Cadillac. The grille emphasizes the car's substantial road presence. The Cadillac Crest appears in a conceptual form, streamlined and tailored to the car's overall design. This design idea for a revised crest reflects the fact that Cadillac's unmistakable symbol has evolved dozens of times through history to mark new eras or design achievements.

Exquisitely Crafted Interior

The interior of Elmiraj blends elegantly crafted luxury and generous space with driver-focused performance elements. The upper section of the instrument panel is a single piece extending across the full width of the car, while the lower forms a cockpit space tailored for performance.

"A concept provides not only an opportunity to explore new design ideas, but to pursue new techniques for elegant craftsmanship and materials," said Gael Buzyn, lead interior designer.

Backlit titanium trim curves from the cowl to the doors, dividing the rich upper camel leather from the wood trim. Cadillac Studio craftsmen handpicked fallen Brazilian Rosewood, a wood veneer prized for its use for hundreds of years in home furnishings and musical instruments. The wood is hand-cut into three dimensional sections for perfect control of the grain flow.

The car's instrumentation features an analog tachometer and speedometer that are transparent. Directly behind the analog gauges sits a wide screen, high resolution display which projects driver information and the output of a front-mounted camera. A 10-inch touchscreen for navigation and connectivity can be concealed inside the instrument panel when not in use.

The 2+2 layout features high-performance seats, designed to support spirited driving while also delivering luxury accommodation. Elmiraj passengers might actually lobby to sit in the back. The rear bucket seats each contain a valet feature to ease entry and exit. The front bucket seat slides 10 inches forward while the rear bucket seat slides 4 inches forward to meet the passenger, then slides him or her back into position once seated. The rear bucket seats recline for additional comfort.

Many of the most celebrated automotive designs through history have been luxury coupes

"We were influenced in particular by the 1967 Eldorado, both its actual design and the fact that in its time that car was a very stark contrast and a new direction. More recent design like the CTS-V Coupe and the ELR are provocative," said Dean, the advanced design director. "Both of these cars were major statements of performance and luxury and drove Cadillac forward into new territory."

Designers at General Motors' advanced design studio in North Hollywood, Calif., under the direction of Frank Saucedo, led the development of the car's interior and exterior. Elmiraj was hand-built by in-house craftsmen in Michigan.

2006 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai has announced plans to recall 240,000 Sonata and Azera models registered in the northern United States over corrosion caused by the use of road salt. Exposure to the salt can cause rust to form (we know, basic chemistry here), and that the corrosion can change the alignment of the rear wheels, according to Reuters.

Sonatas from the 2006 to 2010 model years, built between March 1, 2005 and January 21, 2010, and Azeras from the 2006 to 2011 model years, built between September 27, 2005 and November 22, 2010, are covered only if they were registered in the following states: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Washington, DC. So basically, every state from the Midwest, to the central Atlantic coast, to New England. It is unclear exactly how many Sonatas or Azeras make up the 240,000 total number.

Hyundai is also recalling 20,300 of its 2013 Santa Fe Sports, while sister company Kia is recalling 9,345 2014 Sorentos. This second recall only covers Santa Fe Sport and Sorento models with the base, 2.4-liter engine and front-wheel drive. Apparently, the front axle driveshaft can develop cracks and separate.

No injuries, accidents or fatalities have been reported due to these recalls. As of this writing, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not issued an official recall notice, so it's not clear when the recall campaign will begin.

ford c-max hybrid 47 mpg ratingAaaaaand that's that. After lawsuits and more lawsuits over the fuel economy rating for the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid, Ford will officially announce tomorrow that it will drop that rating. The company has tried software updates to try and get the C-Max Hybrid MPG level to where it was supposed to be, but has now admitted defeat in that fight in what Automotive News calls "a rare and potentially costly move." Ford is currently not making any statements on the issue but we should know a lot more tomorrow morning. For what it's worth, there isn't any specific mention of the Fusion Hybrid, but there's certainly a chance that car will also be down-rated.

The current rating for the car is 47 miles per gallon, across the board, something Ford was happily trumpeting over and over in the public space, comparing the car to the Prius V. Of course, we've heard complaints since at least October 2012 that 47 mpg is an unlikely number to hit from various sources. Also in 2012, Kia and Hyundai admitted it, too, had inflated MPG numbers. The companies said "honest mistakes" and "human error" during in-house testing caused those problems. We assume we'll hear some sort of reason for the C-Max's problem numbers from Ford tomorrow. The big question is: what will the new numbers be. Any guesses?

Petrolicious interviews three classic car owners in New York City to find out how they do it.

There are vintage car owners, and then there are vintage car owners who live in New York City. The notoriously compacted urban sprawl is one of the least likely places for people to own vintage cars due to the lack of parking and garages, but that doesn't stop some enthusiasts from finding a way to enjoy owning their classics.

In its latest video, Petrolicious documents three NYC-based car enthusiasts who go through great means to own their classic automobiles. Yale Evelev owns one car, an old, long-hood 911, stores it in a parking garage and only drives it when he wants to. Ike Kitman, who owns an Alfa Romeo GTV6, must take a 40-minute bus ride to get to his car in Palisades, which he says is a small commitment. Raphael Orlove parks his Volkswagen Beetle in a supermarket lot and first must walk the city and take the subway if he wants to go for a drive.

The way we see it, if these three enthusiasts can achieve their classic-car aspirations while living in the Big Apple, they have their cake, and they're eating it, too. We have to point out, however, that, despite the "small commitment" of owning his Alfa GTV6, Kitman did say he was slightly jealous of California car owners, who he thinks have it easy. After hearing about the 40-minute bus ride to his garage, this writer pleads guilty as charged. To see for yourself the challenges â€" and the joys â€" of owning a classic car in NYC, check out the video below.

BMW M4 Concept Pebble Beach

Remember how, when the first BMW M4 Concept images leaked earlier today, we told you the official information would be coming later this evening? Well, scratch that. The whole kit and caboodle is now online, meaning all the official details are below, as well as a full gallery of high-res images above.

The replacement for the M3 Coupe, the Concept M4 Coupe shares a number of styling similarities with its dearly departed forbearer. To us, it's kind of like a mishmash of greatest hits from the new 4 Series and the old M3. The 4 Series headlights have grown on us, and the side grilles, which are part of BMW's Air Curtain and Air Breather system, are functional.

The power dome in the hood is smaller than on the M3, but is of a similar shape, while the rear diffuser and exhaust treatment look like they're lifted straight from the old car, aside from being finished in carbon fiber. Speaking of which, the carbon fiber roof sports a new touch, a cool BMW M tri-color that runs the length of the roof on the driver's side. The 20-inch M alloy wheels come in a twin five-spoke design, which has sort of become a calling card of BMW's M cars in recent years. Hiding behind those meaty wheels are M's carbon-ceramic brakes.

While you can read a lot about the M4 Concept's design in the press release below, you won't find anything about what sits under that power dome. BMW has been mum on which engine and transmission would motivate its new M car, so it looks like we're going to be waiting until a production model arrives to find out just what's what.

Stay tuned for more live images and impressions direct from this weekend's Monterey festivities.

BMW Concept M4 Coupe â€" the true essence of BMW M.

Pebble Beach/Munich. On 16 August, amidst magnificent award-winning sports cars of yesterday on show at the "Concours d'Elegance" in Pebble Beach, the BMW Group will be offering a first outlook on a high-performance sports car of tomorrow â€" the BMW Concept M4 Coupe.

"The BMW Concept M4 Coupe reflects the BMW M philosophy in ideal form: It combines motor racing genes and unrestricted everyday suitability in a highly emotional overall concept. For four generations, the BMW M3 has put motor racing on the road and the BMW Concept M4 Coupe consistently continues to pursue this fundamental idea. The new model designation "M4" refers â€" like all other BMW M automobiles â€" to the series on which this concept car is based," explains Dr. Friedrich Nitschke, Chairman of the Managing Board of the BMW M GmbH.

THE DESIGN OF THE NEW BMW CONCEPT M4 COUPE. The BMW Concept M4 Coupe, finished in the colour "Aurum Dust" exclusively developed for this model, continues with BMW M's design language â€" strong in character, emotional and extremely dynamic. From every perspective it is the embodiment of agility, dynamism and superior performance. Large air inlets in the dynamic front, a swift design language in the side and a sporty, low rear give clear visual indication of the car's tremendous dynamic potential. CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastics) elements such as the front splitter, the roof, or the rear diffuser underline the optimized lightweight concept down to the smallest detail. "At BMW M, design is above all an expression of function. Each design element is based on the underlying technical demands of the BMW M high performance concept. Thanks to this authenticity, the design provides a taste of what can be experienced with each model: Power, precise control and superior handling â€" an unforgettable driving experience on the racetrack as well as on the road" says Adrian van Hooydonk, head of BMW Group Design.

THE FRONT END. Faceted surfaces, precise contours and distinctive visual depth shape the powerfully expressive front end of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe. The classic "BMW face" with its double kidney and a modern interpretation of the twin round headlamps featuring LED technology provides the car with a distinctive identity, making it recognizable as a BMW M automobile at very first glance. The bonnet with its characteristic power dome symbolises the immense power of the engine that lies beneath it. This dynamic element is further emphasized by a distinctive contour. A further striking feature on the front of the new BMW Concept M4 Coupe is the BMW M double bar kidney grille: The black kidney grille bars imitate the characteristic M double spoke design of the BMW M wheels, the M4 emblem on the kidney grille adding an exclusive accent to the front end.

The powerfully shaped front apron sporting the carbon fibre front splitter immediately catches the eye. The three large air intakes supply the high performance power unit with sufficient cooling air. At the same time, the interplay of surfaces, contours and volume authentically express the car's supreme potential. The sharply outlined vertical air vents located in the outer section of the side air intakes, the so-called Air Curtain is a design statement of its own. Together with the Air Breather, this feature ensures the aerodynamic closure of the wheel arches and consequently, improved air flow and fuel consumption.

THE SIDE. Viewed from the side, the dynamic impression conveyed by the front end continues. A streamlined, flat silhouette and an athletic body design characterize the BMW Concept M4 Coupe. Typical BMW proportions â€" a long bonnet, long wheelbase, set-back greenhouse and a short front overhang â€" create an exceptionally dynamic appearance even when the car is at a standstill. Muscular wheel arches and the powerfully expressive surface language reveal the BMW Concept M4 Coupe's supreme performance capabilities at very first glance.

The flowing roofline enhances the BMW Concept M4 Coupe's sporty design with elegant finesse. As a visible high-tech lightweight element, the contoured CFRP roof characterizes the BMW Concept M4 Coupe's technically innovative design. The CFRP roof reduces weight and ensures a lower centre of gravity, thus facilitating an even sportier driving experience. Here, form and functionality are optimally combined in typical BMW M fashion.

The coupe-like roofline flows into the muscularly designed rear end, which then adopts the contour of the roof. A rear spoiler lip is integrated into the trunk lid for optimum downforce. Thanks to this feature, the BMW Concept M4 Coupe not only has better downforce values, but when viewed from the side, also gains in volume and length, in athletic presence. Below it, the boldly shaped, muscular sill emphasizes the car's sportive stance on the road.

A conspicuous detail on the car's side panels is the redesigned M gill. This characteristic M design element constitutes a both sporty and functional statement. On the Concept M4 Coupe, the M gills incorporate the Air Breather, which together with the Air Curtain within the front apron serves to ventilate the wheel arches and facilitate better airflow values. Exclusively designed, bicoloured 20" M light alloys boasting the typical M double spoke design complete the sportive design of the car's sides. The five filigree double-spokes rims with polished outer surfaces reveal M Carbon ceramic brakes.

THE REAR. The muscular rear end of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe gives visual indication of the car's supreme power. The entire tail section boasts a sculptural and broad appearance. The large shaded areas beneath the spoiler give the rear end an even flatter and athletic appearance. At the same time, the flat taillights located far to the outside, the wide track and the powerfully flared wheel arches underscore the car's stable stance on the road. Horizontal lines accentuate the car's width, lowering the visual centre of gravity even further.

Within the tail section of the BMW Concept M4 Coupe, the design feature of the front apron comprising faceted surfaces is formally replicated and continued further. The interplay of surfaces and precise contours around the optical air vents further accentuates the rear end's dynamic design. Twin tailpipes are a characteristic M feature on the rear end. The two pairs of carbon fibre tailpipes are encompassed by the sculptural rear apron. A carbon fibre rear diffuser completes the overall aerodynamics package.

The BMW M GmbH.

The BMW M GmbH is a one hundred percent subsidiary of the BMW AG. With products and services in the five business areas BMW M Automobiles, BMW M Performance Automobiles, BMW Individual, M Sport Packages and Options, BMW Group Driving Experience as well as security, emergency and special purpose vehicles, it addresses customers with particularly high demands on the performance, exclusivity and individuality of their automobile. The Munich-based company was founded in 1972 as the BMW Motorsport GmbH. Since then, the letter M has been internationally synonymous with success in motor sports and with the fascination of high-performance sports cars for use in everyday road traffic. The BMW M GmbH possesses the status of an independently operating automobile manufacturer. In the business year 2012, the BMW M GmbH achieved worldwide sales of just under 27,000 vehicles.
